Email Session 2: The Boatman's Guild & Protective Circles

The night passes too quickly, as usual and you wake up tired, not looking forward to the fatigues of spell casting. The morning is uneventful. You eat a quick free breakfast consisting of milk, eggs and bread, all of it past its prime. Then you exit the College and hail a boatman. It is difficult because the ever-present fog is particularly dense today. In spite of the poor visibility you hail a boatman fairly quickly. He is Tilean, of course, but claims to know how to find the Brush and Gull. Heading for the Brush and Gull and yet another day of casting Lightning till you feel sick from fatigue, you can only see the fog, so you turn your mind inwards and think about these last few days. Somehow you thought that the life of an enchanter was more glamorous. Is it just you or is it a lot of hard work? While you ponder that conundrum, two boats full of big men come up along side your boat. At first you think it is a robbery, but then a fat, important looking, grey haired Wastelander with too many rings on his fingers shout “Hey Tilean, you are not a member of the Boatmans Guild, are you?”. Before the Tilean can answer, and frankly you are uncertain whether he understands what is going on, the Guildsmen have commandeered the Tileans little boat, made you and the Tilean change to the other two boats and all three boats are sailing in different directions. You noticed that the Tilean was forced to pay for his trip and that the cost inexplicably matched the content of his wallet. Your boat sails straight for the Brush and Gull, while the Wastelander boatman explains how many Tileans are not proper members of the guild and that you should always verify the license of the boatman in order too avoid these unpleasant situations. As you arrive and the boatman collects his fee, the fog lifts and you can see the beautiful building of the Brush and Gull. The sight has become strangely familiar and you consider the possibility that in the future you will actually feel home sick if you are deprived of the luxury of the Brush and Gull for too long.

The days of an enchanter have a very distinct rhythm. You spend your energy on magic to the brink of exhaustion and while you recuperate you study and prepare. You expect that Sibo probably have some magicks active at all times, but as he has no magical aura there is nothing to study. Obviously you do not have a magical aura either, thanks to Sibos spell, so the most interesting thing to study in the lab is the Spellstones, as they are the only items with magical auras. You ask Sibo for permission which he laughingly grants you with the words: “No Newstaff has ever understood Spellstones, but you can try all you want. Make history!”. The word makes you wonder what status Sibo has. He is definitely not an Apprentice or a Newstaff like you. Although your are fiercely proud to have received your staff from the College, you are acutely aware that that only makes you accepted at the very bottom of the hierarchy of mages, so is Sibo a Fellow then? You have never seen a familiar at his side, but then again many Fellows do not wish for their familiars to be publicly known, both because of the public mark of a wizard can be hazardous to your health and because familiars makes good targets for potential enemies. Then again he is probably able to enchant his own staff, which would make him a Master. You are fairly certain that he is not a Grand Master due to his young age and because you had never heard of him before you met him. Anyway you do not know the actual difference between a Master and a Grand Master, so does it really matter? You push the train of though aside as you know it is time for another series of Lightning. For 6 days now you have helped enchant small gemstones at a brisk pace of about 40 gemstones per day. It must be a big time customer. Oh you almost forgot: “By the way Sibo, can you teach me that Conceal Magic spell.” As you notice he is hesitant, but not repulsed by the idea, you add the most reliable argument in Marienburg: “I’ll pay you, off course”. Sibo looks surprised and says “Do you have money? How much will you pay me?” A moment of silence then he adds “for this very useful spell?” You understand his intonation perfectly. Conceal magic is neither Air nor Water magic and thus illegal. Furthermore, it is specifically designed to evade detection by the church or witchhunters. “I do not have money” Sibo looks disappointed, so you quickly add “but I have a book explaining Lightning Magicks”. Sibo asks “Do you know Detect Magic? You cannot learn Conceal Magic without it.” You concede that you have not learned that spell yet and starts to explain, but Sibo cut you short saying “We cannot haggle all day, we have work to do. I’ll teach you for the book, when you have learned the requirements, but only if you teach the client how to throw Lightning. It is part of the deal!” You do not know whether he means part of your deal or part of his deal with the client, but you do not inquire because he seems very focused on continuing, so you go back to enchanting Lightning Orbs.

As always you find it immensely difficult to concentrate right after spell casting due to the immense fatigue, so instead of studying you gossip with Sibo, who is never tired as he manages the process, but do not actually enchant anything while you are watching. Sibo is a friendly man, who has never left the city of Marienburg. He never had time and besides there are plenty of beautiful women right here. Why travel? More seriously he adds “When I graduated my older brother had already established the shop and it was only natural that I help him. Now a days it is actually me who runs the shop”. He smiles proudly. After another round of spell casting, you sit down for lunch and he asks you a little about your life, but as you have been living inside the College for years and since he is very familiar with life inside the walls, you gossip a little about the teachers. Like you Sibo did not enjoy the monotone college life and he states with a laugh “The only thing that can make me go back there is citywide uprising burning suspected witches at every corner! No this, here, right now. This is living”. Sibo grabs another delicate roll prepared by the famous chef working in the Brush and Gull. He stuffs the whole roll inside his mouth and is unable to speak for a while. You choose to follow his example and together in silence you eat. After several rolls each, you ask him if he has any children to which he answers “Most likely I have a lot”. He has trouble breathing while he laughs uncontrollably.

After a long day’s work at the Brush and Gull, you go directly home to the College. On the way back you wonder whether it is possible for you to stay one class ahead of the client while teaching him to throw Lightning. You conclude that provided that the client is inexperienced in the ways of magic. That should be too hard. A smile forms on your lips as a plan forms in your mind. Safely back in the College you go directly to the library, where you search for any text on traditional wizard clothing and it’s potential benefits in the enchantment process as you have done every evening this week. It is difficult to find any relevant text, because the College do not have any specialists in Enchantment, since that is a different school than Air and Water and thus illegal. However, you know that something must exist, because Masters enchant their own staves. Surely that is an enchantment? After several hours, a lot of dust and a couple of books later, you come up empty again. You decide to go to bed and prepare for yet another day as an enchanter. Every time you think of yourself as an enchanter you get thrills down your spine. What incredible luck! And right out of College! Ok it is hard work, but you, a former street urchin, is now an enchanter! You kind of wish that you could tell everybody, but you keep your silence. You know it is not a good idea, because you are not supposed to know the spell Lightning.

Nightmares of Witchhunters wielding Lightning finding you at the Brush and Gull and thereafter hunting you through the streets of Marienburg fill your dreams this night. Once you even wake up sweaty, only to find the comforting darkness of your familiar little room in the College. As you go back to sleep, the nightmares leaves alone. You wake up late this morning, but are content to have rested a little during the last part of the night. “The demon of Nightmares and Magic must have been well fed during the first part of the night.” You think as you get dressed. Noticing your ragged clothing, not worthy of an enchanter, you decide to go shopping as soon as possible. You need many different things and it is not like you do not have the money. Feeling rich you skip breakfast, graps a pie on the street and hail a boat. You make a point of checking the license of wastelander boatman, who nods approvingly. As usual the fog partially hinders your view of the city, but anyway you are past playing the tourist as you did the first few days on the outside, so it does not really bother you. Instead you relish in the quiet before another hard day at the Brush and Gull.

As always Herr Südenwald greets you at the door. He does not comment that you arrive later than usual, but silently escorts you to the room. Sibo on the other hand seems a little annoyed “You should be on time. I have waited almost an hour. I am telling you straight: You do not want to be late on a project for Casanova”. Apologizing you seize the moment and try to satisfy your curiosity: “Sorry I did not know we are on a tight deadline. How is the boss? ” Sibo answers “If you knew him you would not use that word in the same sentence. Better if you know nothing of Casanova. Better for you and better for me”. A bit confused you inquire “What word?”. Without a hint of humour Sibo replies “Dead-line”. The rest of the day your spirit is bit subdued. It seems like a long day and when it finally ends some time later than usual, you go straight back to the College in order to research the traditional clothing of wizards as you have done every evening this week. The results of this evenings research looks equally useless, when you are approached by Master Ewans, a dwarven master, who has teached at the College for more than a hundred years. “Hallo, young one” he greets you. “Hallo Master Ewans, it is an honour to meet you.” Master Ewans grimaces, apparently he has no time for pleasantries. With a wave of his hand he command you to silence and continues “I have seen you searching for books on Enchantments. It is too early for you, Newstaff, but you should come see me in a couple of years.” He winks. Mustering your courage, you reply “Actually, I am looking for a reason why the traditional clothing of wizards are robes and hats. It is too wide spread to be a coincidence, yet I have never heard of any good explaination”. Master Ewans looks surprised. “Is that really not taught anymore? It is a classic trick after all.” He shakes his head mumbling something about the degeneration of the magical disciplines and says “I like the way you think, so I will give you a hint. Think about Protective Circles.” Once again he winks, then he leaves. You steer your search towards Protective Circle, knowing quite well that you did not pay too much attention in that class. It simply seemed premature to discuss how to protect against Tzeenz’s Curse before you knew any magicks at all. Anyway after reading up a couple of hours, you conclude that wizards who wants to wear normal cloth and be protected by a circle, when casting spells could sow in a silver thread into the bottom of robes and be protected. If the wizard does not use gestures when casting spells a silver thread in the hat lining will do. Quite proud of your findings you turn in, dreaming of a world not unlike Marienburg but suddenly filled with circles everywhere.

Email Session 1: The First Days of Work

The next day you wake up early in your new room at the College of Sea Magic and Navigation, excited to start your new job as an enchanter. You are a bit worried that your unfamiliarity with the College of Enchantment will be a problem even though your boss, Sibo, only inquired about your skills in the College of Lightning at the job interview. Quickly, you get dressed and gulps down an uninteresting breakfast."But hey the food is free at the College", you think to yourself as you chew on a particularly common piece of bread. You leave the College and hire a boatman to take you to the Brush and Gull in the rich district of Goudberg. The boatman is a fat smelly Tilean type, who smiles when he hears the address, probably expecting a big tip or something. He will be disappointed. Any way his stereotypical mannerism makes you consider whether the Knights of Purity have a point with their very broad definition of mutants. In any case there definitely seems to be many more of Tileans around than before you joined the College and most of them dirty and smelly. However, the fat man get you to your destination without a word. Standing on the dock you see a well build and well maintained three winged building with a private harbour in the courtyard guaranteeing privacy for the many exclusive guests. Two wings are five stories high while the last wing is only three stories high. From the courtyard harbour, there are two main entrances, both with signs. One sign says "Sign of the Gull and Brush", while the other say "The Brush and Gull". Slightly confused you pick the nearest entrance, but is quickly dismissed by an aspiring artist, who in no uncertain terms explains to you that only a fool doesn't know of the greatest portrait painter in Marienburg and his school called "Sign of the Gull and Brush". "The hotel is the big building over there.", he say, pointing at the two 5 storied wings.
As you enter the expensive hotel, you are impressed by the tasteful decorations everywhere. The restaurant comprises of a large room with tables and a barto the left and a lounge with a large fire place and a collection of fine furniture to the right. Straight ahead a servant awaits with infinite patience, behind him stairs leads to the upper floors. In the corner a 3 man orchestra is playing. "This is definitely more like it", you think to yourself, "Way better than life inside the confining walls of the college". Soft music floats through the air and you wonder how come the College of Music was banned 500 years ago when the Emperor banned all the Colleges and how come the College of Music was not allowed to join the College of Air and the College of Water when Baron Henry's College of Sea Magick and Navigation was founded after the War of Independence. Of course you know the answer - Tzeenz never paid much attention to these Colleges as he favoured the College of Fire above all else among the elemental Colleges. However, you have always entertained a lingering doubt that the answer could be that music neither helps trade nor war. Typical! Perhaps beauty not truth is the first casualty of any conflict. Realising that you were actually physically stunned by the music and the beauty of the restaurant, you snap out of it as a large elegantly armoured man approaches you from the lounge. He is not wearing any uniform, but his armour is very well made with elaborate designs edged into the metal. He wears a two-handed sword on his back. "Isn't that illegal?", you wonder without actually articulating a question as you note his fearless gaze and purposeful stride. He is obviously a veteran. Without introductions of any kind, the man asks you: "Are you Marius?" You barely hesitate, before the man adds:"Sibo sent me. I'm Herr Südenwald." You can't help thinking "So are we on a first name basis or what?" as you follow the man up the stairs. However, last name basis somehow seems appropriate for this stoic warrior. Herr Südenwald leads you to a suite on the third floor, where Sibo greats you in his usual friendly mannerism., but he quickly dismisses Herr Südenwald asking him to guard the door. A request Herr Südenwald follows without hesitation. Sibo leads you to a neighbouring room, which has been temporarily refitted from small private lounge to an enchanters work space. There is a sizeable fireplace in the room with a good fire going. "No one is saving on the wood in a place like this", you notice with a smile. On the way you ask Sibo "Where did you find him?" while pointing back at Herr Südenwald. Sibo replies with a shrug "Marquant's Escorts is the only way to go if you want prober protection without hiring an army and I really dislike being interrupted when I work. Besides you know how guards affect the enchantment process". Actually you do not, but now do not seem like the time to confess ignorance. "Anyway, I see you walk the streets of Marienburg with your Channeling active. You should not do that. Of course it is up to you, but since it is illegal for you to cast spells on the streets, some withhunters and clergy see channeling in itself as an infraction. They will have you feeding the fish before you know what happened. In my humble opinion it is better to travel incognito and in any case I insist that you at least do so on your way to and from here." Not knowing how to respond meaningfully to the lessons of an obviousæy more experienced mage, you simply nod and thank him for his advice, reassuring him that you will comply with his wishes. Sibo continues, "I spoke to Casanova, you start at 1 Gylden a day", Sibo informs you as he closes the door. You can hardly believe your luck and accepts with a formal nod.
The actual work is surprisingly simple. A number of small gemstones has been prepared for you and all you need to do is cast Lightning upon the gem. The gem attracts the Lightning, which do not harm the table upon which the gemstone lies. It is of course tiring work as each casting fatigues you. After casting the first couple of spell castings, Sibo stops you and inquires how much training you have received. It is quite obvious that he already knows, so you see no point in lying about how inexperienced you are. He nods apparently liking your honesty: "You need help! This is inviting disaster. We will resume tomorrow". He hands you one gylden and ask Herr Südenwald to escort you out and hires a boatman to take you anywhere you want. Once again it is a fat smelly Tilean type, who do not speak. You are uncertain whether it is the same man who brought you here, however, the Tilean do not show any signs of recognising you. You spend the rest of the day at the College, studying the Lightning Spell and realise that Sibo was right. There was several aspects of the spell that you did not quite master yet, but how is that going to change tomorrow you wonder, as you go to bed after a rewarding day. Your last thought of the day is "One gylden a day. I'll be rich!"

Next morning, breakfast is it usual common self and you seriously consider making it a habit to eat breakfast at work. You fantasise about breakfast at the Brush and Gull and decided that it is a good idea as soon as possible, but it will have to wait, because taday you are running a bit late. You hire a boatman to get you to the Brush and Gull. Surprise you get a born and bred Wastelander, who cannot shut up about todays Bloodbowl match, the Marienburg Mariners against a dwarven team called Middenheim Miners. He makes you wish for yesterday's fat smelly Telian boatman. When you finally arrive, you suspect the the boatman took e deliberate detour, so that he had time to finish his tale and earn two pennys more. "Bastard! I would gladly pay double for a clean-shaved silent Tilean type.", you think to yourself as you crawl unto the Brush and Gull dock.
Her Südenwald greats you at the door and escorts you up the stairs, where Sibo is waiting. "No active channeling. You understand simple instructions and you are on time two days in a row.... And they say it is hard to find good help these days. You keep it up, young man, and you will go far.", he smiles and leads you into the temporary lab. Like Yesterday, Herr Südenwald is instructed to stay and guard the door. "That door is sooo wrong for any burglar", you think as you leave Herr Südenwald behind and enters the lab.
Sibo quickly enters work mode and reveals a new collection af small gemstones. They all shine the same a light purple except one, which is both light purple and light blue, but not the familiar light blue of Air Magic. Sibo asks "I bring you a gift to help you with todays work. Can you see it?" Without hesitation you point to the small gemstone, which is different than the others. "You have a good eye, Marius. Take it and concentrate on feeling the magic of an Arch mage in your veins." Slightly nervous you take the gemstone and concentrate. To your astonishment, the gemstone disintegrates to dust in your hand, however, that is nothing compared to the feeling of power entering your body. You feel invincible. You have never seen this spell before, but you will certainly research this effect later once you are back in the College. Sibo smiles knowingly and ask retorically "So are you ready to start?". He fetches some blue robe with stars and matching pointy hats and a pair of masks covered in runes. The cloth looks like something from a fairy tale, but none of the equipments is magical. Sibo reads your facial expression and explains with a shrug "Enchantments seem to function better when the enchanter is dressed in traditional cloth." Then he puts the robes, hat and mask on. Slightly perplexed you follows his example. As yesterday your job is simply to cast Lightning on the prepared gemstone, while Sibo watches. It is tiring work with about 10minutes rest between each spellcasting, but you manage to enchant almost 40 gemstone over the next 9 hours. The only break is for lunch, where you get a great lunch served in your room. During the day you get to know Sibo better as he is very friendly and talkative. Apparently Sibo makes his living offering magic items to rich and powerful in Marienburg. He confesses, that it is a good life and business is booming. At one point you ask him what the lightening orbs are for. "That is a business secret, Marius. Almost all of our customers want to be anonymous to avoid trouble with Clergy and Witchhunters. Not that so powerful people actually needs to concern themselves with such matters, but apparently it is politically opportune to do so.", he answers and continuous "Will you by the way be interested in teaching my client the art of Throwing Lightning?" You inquire about the pay and is informed that it is always the same. Saying you'll have to think about it, you stay quit for the rest of the meal, while Sibo talks about some of the weirder request he and his brother have received over the years, such as a talking lamp that wakes up people at a pre-set time with both light and sound. Apparently this was a particularly challenging project.
After a long second day, Sibo and you prepare to part ways and agree to continue tomorrow. "Oh one last thing. I almost forgot. Let me help you disguise that enchantment, so that you arrive in one piece tomorrow. Is that allright?" Waiting formally for your accept, Sibo cast a spell you do not recognise, but which will also be the subject of late night research as soon as possible. You do see however that your magical aura vanishes. "No need to cancel your Channeling tonight", Sibo say and clap you on your back as you part ways.
It is the typical fat garlic-breathed Tilean that sails you back to the College, where you go to bed early, exhausted from casting more spells in a single day than ever before. Very early next morning you go to the library to research the two spells of interest. You find that one belong to the College of Enchantment and the other belong to the College of Meta-Magic. The first is called Spellstone and let you save a spell for later use inside a gemstone. The second is called Conceal Magic and hide magical auras. it would take years of study for you to master any of them, but especially Spellstone is way beyond your reach. You wonder how such a relatively young mage as Sibo have come to master such complicated magic. Running out of time, you put the thought aside, leaves the liberary and the College and hails the typical Tilean boatman to take you to the Brush and Gull for yet another days work in your new profession.

Marius Went to Town

A new year has come so I thought it was time for a new character.

I rolled up a wizard, named Marius van Tasselwijk, who recently has finished his apprenticeship at the College of Navigation and Sea Magicks in Marienburg. After a rough childhood where he was forced to live on the streets making a living out of scratch and prostitution - Ranald's Luck suddenly one day came his way - A fat merchant had fallen asleep besides him and Marius was able to sneak away with his purse. The purse contained enough valuables to sponsor his apprenticeship at the College for 6 years where the young Marius studied the wonders of Air magick. Sadly his funds are running low and Marius is forced to earn some money if his studies are to continue - therefore the newly educated wizard left the safe college buildings in search of a job. The years of studying definitely had not increased his ability to communicate with the dock workers of Suiddock - so his first night of carousing ended with that he was being shaved balled by an angry dockworker - much to the joy of the other guests at "The Hanged Cat".

With a new seriously low self-confidence he was able to find a new job the next night - a charming fellow at "The Drunken Captain" heard about Marius' abilities and thought his boss - a guy with the ridiculous name Casanova - could use him. Marius was blindfolded and shipped to an island where he was led into a house with shutters before the windows. Here he was introduced to another wizard called Sibo. Sibo wanted help inventing some darts imbibed with Marius' lightning magick. After some talk Sibo and Marius agreed to meet at the "Brush 'n Gull" the next day.
